Madrid Spain Plaza Mayor Madrid

The Plaza Mayor is a central plaza within the city of Madrid. This property is rectangular in its shape, and is surrounded by three residential buildings with 237 balconies.

The origins of this plaza go back to the Austrian period, to 1581, when Philip II of Spain asked a renowned Renaissance architect, Juan de Herrera, to make a plan of remodeling the busiest area of the former Plaza Del Arrabal. But the construction didn't start until 1617, during the Philip III of Spain's reign. The Plaza Mayor as we know it today is the work of the architect Juan de Villanueva.

Once this very plaza was a host for diverse events: markets, soccer events, bullfights, public executions, etc. It has also been the centre of festivals, royal coronations, gathering more than 50,000 spectators on its territory.

At the centre of the plaza is a bronze statue of King Philips III, straddling his horse, constructed in 1616 by the Italian sculptors Giovanni de Bologna and his apprentice Pietro Tacca. First this statue appeared in the Casa de Campo, but in 1848 it was removed to the Plaza Mayor. At the same very period of time the plaza was redesigned and some gardens appeared on its property, but those were removed in 1936.
