Madrid Spain Architecture

The history of Madrid’s architecture dates back to the middle of the IX century, when Mohamed I ordered the construction of a small palace, which nowadays is the site of the Palacio Real. A small citadel was raised near this palacio (al Mudaina). The citadel was conquered later by Alfonso VI, and in 1329 the Cortes first assembled in Madrid.

So the city of Madrid, which has been constructed more than one thousand years ago, presents in our time the memorial of the past years. In spite of the fact that the city was conquered several times and thus destroyed partially, there are a host of monuments of the antique architecture, boasting with majesty and sodden with the breath of past historical events, taken place within the city of Madrid and had the greatest impact on its architecture.

The city is most known owing to its richness in architectural aspect, being a home to an extremely big number of historical sites and places of interest, including monuments, museums, art galleries, educational establishments, etc.

When having a sightseeing stroll along the city, it is indispensable to a glance, at least, at such museums of great historical value, as National Archaeological Museum of Spain, located beside the Plaza de Colon and sharing its building with the National Library. This museum was founded in 1867, and since that time the collections of this venue have become richer and richer, what makes it one of the most outstanding museum, containing the pieces of art Pre-historic, Medieval, Celtic, Iberian, Greek, and Roman cultures.

Among the other museums, representing the gorgeousness of Madrid’s architecture of antique times are: Naval Museum, Casa Museo Josse Padilla, Casa Museo Jose Benedito, Museo de Antropologia Medica, etc.

All of these museums were reconstructed, but the touches of genuine ancient Spanish architecture remain, of course, what makes them to be splendid historical venues and plush museums at the same time.

Two main plaza of the city will definitely pamper you from head to toe by the opulence of their architecture. The first one is the Plaza Mayor, which is the central plaza of the city of Madrid, built during the Austrian period. Nowadays it is rectangular in its shape and hosts in its centre the Casa de la Panaderia, serving municipal and cultural functions, and representing the tombstone of the Spanish architecture.

The other one is Puerta del Sol, known as one of the busiest places within the city of Madrid. The square contains the famous clock, whose bells mark the beginning of a new year.

The Templo of Debod is an ancient Egyptian temple, which has been rebuilt in Madrid. So you’ll be able to contemplate even the ancient Egyptian architecture while visiting the city of Madrid!

The Faro de Manclora will impress you indeed as it is a 100 meters transmission tower, projected by famous architect Salvador Perez Arroyo and built in 1992. It is a really unique place, which is, doubtlessly, worth seeing.

The places, named above, consist just a small part of all the existent in the city of Madrid. All of them will take you back to the ancient times and make feel the antiquity of refined architecture of Spain, so go ahead.
